Kemal Gurer, Ph.D., Meteorologist, Principal Environmental Consultant, Environmental Impact Analyst

Kemal

Dr. Gurer received his bachelor's degree from the Department of Meteorology at the Istanbul Technical University in 1983 and came to the United States in 1984 to continue on his graduate education. He obtained his Master's degree from the Atmospheric Sciences Department of Oregon State University and his Ph.D. from the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Dr. Gurer's educational background includes the knowledge on a multitude of disciplines such as large eddy simulation to study the turbulent flow near the surface, around buildings, and within the atmospheric boundary layer in general, the effect of mesoscale atmospheric flow on local meteorology, estimation of future atmospheric conditions by numerical weather prediction, prediction of climate change, and ultimately the effect of changing weather conditions on air quality and the subsequent effect of air pollutants on the environment. Realizing that his atmospheric science background would be enhanced with the support of additional interdisciplinary studies, Dr. Gurer strengthened his education with a minor in Statistics at Oregon State University and a minor in Computer Science at University of Wisconsin-Madison.

With an understanding of strong coupling that exists between our everyday lives and atmosphere that we breathe in, as well as the effects of environmental factors and in particular air pollution on our everyday lives and the environment we live in including our infrastructure such as bridges, roadways, and industrial complexes, Dr. Gurer has coupled his knowledge in atmospheric science, fluid mechanics, statistics, computer science, and the environmental air quality with the civil engineering applications conducted at CivTek International.

Within this capacity, Dr. Gurer has been conducting environmental research via computer modeling and statistical data analyses to study the effects of environmental factors including atmospheric air pollution due to ozone, particulate matter as well as dust storms, and to protect our infrastructure from the harmful effects of environmental factors. Dr. Gurer conducts air quality research, prepares risk analyses as part of Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), and analyzes EISs prepared by private companies and government agencies as part of the Environmental law designed under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The preparation and analyses of EIS is one of the first parts of a project such as building a network of roads, bridges, power plants, and other industrial complexes to understand its impact on the environment before it is being implemented.
